I'm sorry to learn - just now, in early 2009 - of Eric's death. I realized I hadn't seen him in Harvard Square for a couple of years, but I don't spend that much time there anymore.

Eric also worked for a living sometimes! (Maybe this is humorous, maybe not. It's meant to be. When we started Rounder Records, we didn't file any taxes for four years. Then we decided we probably ought to get around to it. Someone recommended Eric, who had a business card describing himself as "The Shaggy Accountant".

He came in, heard we hadn't filed taxes - ever - and started asking questions. He helped us set up a modern accounting system and helped do our books for many years after that. (We hadn't owed anything anyhow - just as we'd thought.)

He was a good friend and I always enjoyed just saying hello as I met him in the Square, on the Cambridge Common, or wherever we crossed paths.

I almost cried seeing Eric again. I was homeless in Boston the 90's and Eric introduced me to Food Not Bombs. He let me come in the kitchen in the church across from the commons and I went every week. 30 years later his last name popped up in my head finally. I always remembered his first. That was the only really nutritious meal I ever ate in those days.
He showed me how to make vegetable curry on a bed of rice and to this day I still make my beans, rice and vegetable curry according to his instruction.

I recently learned that some of the spices/herbs he taught me to use are beneficial for a condition I have. Eric kept me alive by 1. Feeding me nutritious food but also giving me hope in a time of dire need.

I am sorry I missed your passing but I am super grateful I was there to witness your living. Love, J
